Anticipatory Grief

Delayed Grief

Anticipatory grief happens prior to an expected loss. Essentially, it refers to feelings associated with a loss that someone knows is coming. Typically, anticipatory grief is associated with impending death, however, the definition of anticipatory grief has expanded to include other major losses. For example, loss of physical mobility or independence due to illness or injury, impending job loss, a relocation or even a

breakup of a relationship (i.e., separation, divorce).

Delayed grief occurs when people postpone feelings of grief and loss to a later date due to another life event. They may tell themselves that other people's needs are more important than their own and focus on taking care of them. This is an example of them trying to avoid their own painful feelings. Sudden loss may also create feelings of shock, numbness and a conscious or unconscious inability to cope with grief immediately. Delayed grief can occur weeks, months or even years after a loss.

Complicated Grief

Cumulative Grief

Complicated grief also known as ‘complicated bereavement’, ‘chronic grief’ or ‘complicated grief disorder’ involves experiencing symptoms accompanied by an array of thoughts, feelings and behaviors that become severe in longevity and impair one's ability to function.

Cumulative grief also known as a ‘grief overload’ occurs when someone experiences multiple losses that are happening in a short period of time; or before processing an earlier grief moment. This can lead to the inability to grieve a loss before
experiencing another and/or losses occur in too rapid of succession to heal from the initial loss.

Statistics

Regarding Grief, Loss & Trauma

Professional Athletes

Statistics Regarding Grief, Loss & Trauma From The Last Seven Years
Mental Health Impact: A study published in 2020 found that about 35% of professional athletes reported experiencing symptoms of anxiety and depression after a significant loss, such as the death of a teammate or coach.
Suicide Rates: Research has indicated that athletes are at a higher risk for suicide compared to the general population. A 2019 study showed that former NFL players had a suicide rate that was three times higher than the national average.
Coping Mechanisms: A survey conducted in 2021 revealed that approximately 40% of professional athletes reported using unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as substance abuse, in response to grief and trauma related to losses in their careers.
Support Systems: In a 2022 report, it was found that only 25% of athletes felt they had adequate mental health support available to them during times of grief or trauma, highlighting a gap in mental health resources within professional sports.
Impact on Performance: A 2023 study highlighted that 50% of athletes who experienced significant personal loss reported a decline in their performance levels, linking emotional distress directly to on-field performance issues.
These statistics underscore the need for better mental health resources and support systems
for professional athletes dealing with grief and trauma.
